Rector: Students Have To Apply Research Works and Innovation

As  a State Owned Higher Education with Legal Entity Status (Perguruan Tinggi Berbadan Hukum PTN-BH) and world class university, Diponegoro University (Undip) asked its students in community service program to apply research works and innovations while they are undergoing their community service. Beside sharpening their populism spirit, community service can also be a tool to test research works in real life of the people. Community service program should not only activities of building village’s gate, providing trash can, packaging and product labelling, but also efforts of transferring the long-term applicable technologies. Rector of Diponegoro University Prof.Yos Johan Utama said it on Wednesday (January 3, 2018), as he dispatched 3,006 students of First Team Community Service Program 2018, on plaza of Widya Puraya, Diponegoro University Campus in Tembalang.

Rector said, every year the University send off thousands students in community service program to many cities and regencies in Central Java. Prior to undergo the program, students get some issues of the community to analyse and to solve. “So, community service is an arena for students to apply knowledge they studied in college,” he said.

Rector advised all of the students to be aware of their safety while doing the service, to obey the law, to be polite, to adapt with local customs, and after all, to save Diponegoro University’s reputation.

Head of P2KKN, Edy Prasetyo said that First Team of Community Service Program 2017/2018 will be took place for 42 days, from January 3, 2018 to February 15, 2018. “For the first week, students will conduct initial survey or observation,” he said.

“Totally, number of participants joined in the community service are 3,006 students (45,75% male and 54,25% female), who will be dispatched to 8 regencies (namely Jepara, Pati, Grobogan, Temanggung, Semarang, Kendal, Pekalongan, and Pemalang), in 31 districs (34 teams), and 350 villages. So, number of participants for each village are between 8 and 9 students,” he explained.

Edy added, First Team of the Community Service 2017/2018 is essentially a Community Empowerment Learning, with ratio of multidisciplinary to monodisciplinary program is 2 to 2. It means that each team of students in a village community service must conduct two multidisciplinary programs and each student has to do two monodisciplinary programs in accordance with their competency.(Ipung/Humas)
