Naval Architecture UNDIP Aims for IABEE International Accreditation in 2021

SEMARANG – The Naval Architecture Study Program of Faculty of Engineering of Diponegoro University (UNDIP) aims for international accreditation status of IABEE (Indonesian Accreditation Board for Engineering Education) in 2021 as achievement for leading accreditation. Preparation to achieve IABEE has been carefully prepared, and a visitation schedule has been determined from the accreditation institution.

The Head of Department who is also Head of Naval Architecture Study Program, Dr. Eng Hartono Yudo, ST, MT, said that IABEE visitation schedule is planned for November 30th – December 2nd 2020. This activity may have to be carried out online considering that it is still in Covid-19 pandemic condition, and the results will be announced early in 2021. “We hope that in February 2021, Undip’s Naval Architecture will get international accreditation by IABEE”, said Hartono Yudo, Wednesday (11/11/2020).

According to Yudo, IABBE accreditation will strengthen the readiness of the Department of Naval Architecture to implement outcome base education. This means that each subject delivered must have graduate learning standard that support an independent professional profile so that the graduates are ready to work. “We are planning to become a Naval Architecture Department that excels in marine and maritime technology research at national level and is able to compete at international level. That goal is according to our vision”, he said.

As known fact, IABEE is an independent and non-profit organization, part of Indonesian Engineers Association (Persatuan Insinyur Indonesia) which is dedicated to foster the quality culture in management of higher education in engineering and computing fields. The Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education (Kemenristekdikti) in this case is now at Ministry of Research and Technology / National Research and Innovation Agency, has recognized the existence of IEBEE. It is noteworthy that IEBEE has also been recognized by the International Engineering Alliance (IEA) in the Washington Accord Closed Session on June 12th 2019 as a Signatory Member. Thus IABEE which is formed with the guidance of the JABEE (Japan Accreditation Board for Engineering Education), has the authority of its accreditation in the engineering field recognized as equal to Washington Accord member countries such as the United States, United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Russia, Japan, China, India, Turkey, Hongkong, Taiwan, and Malaysia.

UNDIP Naval Architecture Study Program currently has a bachelor program with A Accreditation. UNDIP Naval Architecture is actually classified as new study program, which is officially established on October 2002. However, this Study Program has succeeded in making various jumps, and since 2016 it has given Predicate A from Higher Education National Accreditation Institution (Badan Akreditasi Nasional Perguruan Tinggi / BAN-PT) with Decree No.1057/SK/BAN-PT/Akred/S/VI/2016 and ISO 9001: 2015 Certification.

UNDIP Naval Architecture Study Program is certainly established at the right time. It can be seen that when it is opened, it immediately gets high enthusiasm from graduates of Senior High School, Vocational High School, and the equivalent. This shows that interest in entering UNDIP Naval Architecture Bachelor Program increases from year to year.

The first admission of new students in 2003, there are 40 students who registered. Then, in the following years, the average number accepted is 130 students. Meanwhile, in 2020/2021 Academic Year, 172 students are accepted, with a total of around 500 students who are actively studying in UNDIP Naval Architecture Study Program.

The number of permanent lecturers from UNDIP Naval Architecture is 17 lecturers. The number of lecturers with doctoral degree are six people. Currently, two lecturers are currently pursuing doctoral education and the other two have just started taking doctoral programs this year, studying at home and some are abroad. “It is expected that in the next two or three years the number of lecturers with doctoral degree increases to 10 people. The number of lecturers is still added by lecturers from outside department, so that the ratio of lecturers to students is 1:25”, Yudo explained.

The Department of Naval Architecture of Diponegoro University, produces graduates to become professionals in the field of engineers, entrepreneurs, managers, academics, and researchers. To produce graduates with superior abilities in applying basic sciences of marine and maritime engineering, UNDIP Naval Architecture is equipped with six superior laboratories to support lectures.

The laboratories are Ship Hydrodynamics Laboratory, Ship Structural and Construction Laboratory, Plumbing System and Ship Machinery Laboratory, Computer Assisted Ship Planning Laboratory, Ship Welding and Meterial Laboratory, and Small Ship and Fisheries Laboratory.

To prepare excellent graduates, the lecture pattern in UNDIP Naval Architecture is also complemented with practical work. Students are required to attend practical work for two months at Indonesian Classification Bureau (Badan Klasifikasi Indonesia) and shipyard.

All of this efforts are for succession of vision and mission of UNDIP Naval Architecture, namely to provide superior and professional academic education in the fields of shipping and maritime technology and to produce competitive graduates. “The prospects of work for our graduate are wide, it can be at Pertamina, shipyards, BKI, Pelni, Pelindo, offshore development, Career Soldier Scholarship in the Navy, in a number of private companies, or become State Civil Servants in several Ministries, especially Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Ministry of Environment and Forestry, and others”, he said.

Nowadays, UNDIP Naval Architecture Study Program is also active in encouraging students and lecturers to conduct research and publication on a regular basis in shipping and maritime technology research, and to encourage ownership of Intellectual Property Rights (Hak Atas Kekayaan Intelektual) as an effort to develop shipping and maritime technology. In addition, it also carries out community service with high quality standards to solve community problems in coastal and shore areas, in the field of shipping and maritime technology, as well as to help improving community welfare. UNDIP also conducts regular evaluations to improve quality, professionalism, capability, accountability, and governance as well as independence in administration of Naval Architecture Department.
