Facing the Global Era 4.0, Master in Literature of Faculty of Humanities UNDIP Develops Contemporary Literature

SEMARANG – To be able to compete in the era of Industrial Revolution 4.0, Master in Literature Study Program of Faculty of Humanities Diponegoro University (UNDIP) is improving its strength as a strategy to have specialties which are not owned by other universities provided similar study program. From various studies, Master in Literature Study Program of Faculty of Humanities Undip chooses to emphasize renewal and innovation in the creation process and media of contemporary literary works.

Head of Master in Literature Study Program of Faculty of Humanities Undip, Dr. M. Suryadi, M.Hum., said that the breakthrough in renewal and innovation is oriented on study and research focusing on Avant Garde Literature, Contemporary Literature, and Virtual Literature. “The three concentrations of learning are our strength because they are not owned by similar program organizers in the country,” said Suryadi, on Monday (1/3/2021).

According to him, Avant Garde Literature, Contemporary Literature, and Oriented Virtual Literature emphasize on renewal and innovation in the process of creating contemporary literary works. “The response to this phenomenon is expected to be able to answer the challenges of industrial revolution 4.0 in literature,” he explained.

The concentration of learning about revolution in Avant Garde Literature, Contemporary Literature and Virtual Literature is concretely realized in Curriculum 2020 and Merdeka Curriculum. Master in Literature Study Program in Undip provides students with three concentrations that are offered in the form of elective courses.

“Avant Garde literature is a movement in literature regarding the importance of experiment as a resistance to established literary conventions. Contemporary literature is a literature of the present, literature of moment, literature of today that tries to move ahead of its time. Meanwhile, Virtual Literature is literature written through virtual media that can be accessed by readers anywhere and anytime, not limited by space or time. This literature is related to advances in information technology and social media,” said Head of Master in Literature Study Program of Faculty of Humanities Undip.

By studying it, it is hoped that students can take full advantage of the rapidly changing information technology era; but still have relevant competencies so that they have excellent skills in the process of self-development in society.

”Competencies related to Avant Garde Literature, Contemporary Literature and Virtual Literature are provisions for students to be involved in responding to challenges of this era in the fields of research, teaching, and literary criticism. They also hone their skill to be professional expertise and to produce innovative and quality publications in the field of literature. These efforts are part in supporting Faculty of Humanities as excellent research faculty in Southeast Asia in 2025 in the field of culture which includes literature,” he said.

To be sure, several courses are considered to strengthen skills for students who take the concentration of English Literature or Indonesian Literature. As a necessary scientific reinforcement, Undip’s Master of Literature also equips students with other important knowledge through courses in World Literature, Literary Research Methods and Cultural Studies, English Literary Principles and Figures as well as Indonesian Literary Principles and Figures.

Meanwhile, to support the writing of final thesis, Master in Literature Study Program provides several elective courses including Semiotics, Feminist Literary Studies, Literary and Cultural Aesthetics, Comparative Literature, Literary Sociology and Multiculturalism in Literature. The materials are presented by the lecturers, four of whom have professors’ titles.
