dr. Yosef Purwoko, M.Kes., Sp.PD.K-Ger (Internal Geriatrics Medicine Specialist of RSND UNDIP): Be Healthy and Happy Elderly People

One period that humans will face in the world is old age. In general, a person’s condition will experience a gradual decline in function with age, both decreasing physical function, mental function, and social function. Having a fit body until old age is everyone’s hope and dream. The consequence of hoping to live a healthy and long life is that you still need to feel happy. Thus these two things (health and happiness) are interrelated.

Being an elderly person is certainly not easy. The elderly often consider themselves useless, withdrawn and discouraged so that not a few of them often have complaints. On the other hand, being an elderly person must be happy, still have the spirit of life, and not limit yourself to create creative and innovative ideas.

“The WHO definition of health is not only physically healthy, but also spiritually and socially healthy. The elderly must be happy and be healthy. The role of the family is also very important because it determines happiness. Age is not a human domain, however, we have to maintain the opportunities that God has given us and fill this life with activities that make us comfortable, healthy and of course happy,” said dr. Yosef Purwoko, M.Kes., Sp.PD., K-Ger., Internal Geriatrics Medicine Specialist of Diponegoro National Hospital (RSND), Diponegoro University (Undip).

“Happy, prosperous, healthy, tough are not only for the elderly but for all ages. Some things that can be implemented from the acronym BAHAGIA (happy), namely Berat Badan/weight, excessive body weight should be avoided;  Asupan/intake, elderly people must pay attention to food intake such as the need for calories, fat, protein, vitamins, minerals and balanced water; Hindari/avoid, to avoid risk factors for degenerative diseases; Agar/in order to, to continue to be useful by doing activities and hobbies; Gerak/move, don’t stop to move according to tolerance; Iman/faith, increase faith to the God Almighty and don’t forget that we are God’s creation, avoid stressful situations and be happy by always praying; Awasi/monitor, check your health periodically,” he concluded.  (Lin – Public Relations)
