Improving Students’ Professional Skills, Department of PWK FT UNDIP Holds International Joint Studio in 2022

The Department of Urban and Regional Planning (PWK) Faculty of Engineering, Diponegoro University (FT Undip) is currently holding an International Joint Studio (IJS) in 2022 which starts on Friday, August 12, 2022 until Monday, August 22, 2022 in a hybrid manner. 2022 IJS raised the theme “Urban Regeneration, City Livelihood-Maker”. The case study for the activities in 2022 IJS is Old Semarang City and consists of several activities, including public lectures, field visits, community workshops, student workshops, lectures, FGDs, serious games, and presentations.

Representing the Dean of FT, Head of the Department of Urban and Regional Planning, Prof. Dr.Ing. Wiwandari Handayani, S.T., M.T., MPS opened the event. In her speech, Prof. Wiwandari welcomed the 2022 IJS participants. “I would like to welcome all participants, many participants who registered for 2022 IJS came from various universities in Indonesia and other countries. Enjoy the activities at Undip,” she said.

Prof. Wiwandari added that the 2022 IJS activity is part of the Pre-Congress of World Planning School Congress (WPSC-APSA), so that the final presentation of 2022 IJS is open to all WPSC participants through the Zoom meeting platform. “We would like to inform you that at the final presentation session on August 22, 2022, we will be open to all conference participants, so please present the best results.” explained Prof. Wiwandari.

Furthermore, Prof. Wiwandari hoped that this activity can be a motivation to continue to increase collaboration and synergy between institutions across countries and can contribute more to the creation of innovations so that academics can produce quality planning products that are ready to be implemented.

In her report, the PIC of 2022 IJS, Dr.Ing. Santy Paulla Dewi, S.T., M.T., explained that 2022 IJS will last for 10 days and there are 28 registered participants, consisting of 19 offline participants and 9 online participants. 2022 IJS is a platform for students to improve their academic competence and professional skills as well as students’ understanding of urban planning from various perspectives.

Santy Paulla added that the participants involved in 2022 IJS this time were Master students. The implementation of 2022 IJS also involves professionals and practitioners. This is done to bridge the gap between formal education and professional life in the design and implementation of urban projects.

This 2022 IJS activity involves several partner universities from within and outside the country. Domestic universities include Diponegoro University, Gadjah Mada University, Bandung Institute of Technology, and Brawijaya University.

Universities from abroad include Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, ESSEC School of Economics France, University of the Philippines Diliman, and also facilitator partners from KotaLab France. In addition, the process also involves local organizations such as IAP Central Java, IALI Central Java, PT. KAI, Kopi Semawis, and representatives from the community.

The planning team who are members of 2022 IJS are required to be able to implement the framework, budget, and governance strategy in the process of realizing a sustainable city. The method of applying 2022 IJS is pedagogy to make students more comfortable and confident in learning new fields of knowledge. Furthermore, 2022 IJS also facilitates participants to learn and understand the dynamics of urban development, including aspects of governance, community participation, real estate speculation, land values and prices, and project management.
