Cardiologist and Blood Vessel Specialist (Vascular Consultant), dr. Novi Anggriyani, Sp.JP (K). FIHA, FICA: Know the Symptoms and Treatment of Varicose Veins

Thursday, August 25, 2022 PKRS RSND held a Healthy Life Talk Show with a discussion about the symptoms and therapy of varicose veins, which was narrated by a Cardiologist and Blood Vessel Specialist (Vascular Consultant), dr. Novi Anggriyani, Sp.JP (K). FIHA, FICA. According to the explanation of dr. Novi, varicose veins are not only when there are blue lumps. The symptoms of varicose veins can be swelling of the legs or ulcers (sores) that do not heal. The risk factor for varicose veins is usually suffered by people whose profession requires a lot of standing or sitting a lot, such as a teacher who stands too much, a tailor who sits too much.

Varicose veins are swelling and dilation of veins. Varicose veins can be caused by a buildup of blood that occurs in the blood vessels so that the blood vessels experience dilation.

“Varicose veins can arise due to genetic factors. The risk factors for varicose veins in women are usually pregnancy and childbirth, while in men are those who often lift heavy objects. Another risk factor is height, the taller a person is, the more at risk of developing varicose veins, due to the influence of gravity,” he added.

She also explained that varicose veins can be cured. Previously the treatment of varicose veins used surgery which was difficult and had many complications. Now, varicose veins therapy is developing rapidly, in the last 10 years one of them is by laser (Endovenous Laser Ablation), where with this laser therapy, varicose veins sufferers do not need surgery and the risk of recurrence after EVLA is small about 2%. Both Vascular Ultrasound for diagnostics and EVLA for therapeutic use are procedures covered by both private and BPJS insurances.

“Symptoms of varicose veins include swelling, itching, heavy feet, frequent leg cramps in the calves and soles of the feet. Patients with varicose veins are quite varied, but indeed the older a person is, the more at risk of developing varicose veins (wear and tear phenomenon). Compression stockings are enough to help people with varicose veins in reducing the pain. However, the use of compression stockings must be directed in advance on how to use, measure, and wash them.” dr. Novi added.

Varicose veins are more common in women than men because pregnancy and childbirth are risk factors for varicose veins. In addition, obesity and a sedentary lifestyle are also risk factors for varicose veins.

Varicose veins can cause complications such as ulcers and blood clots in the veins (deep veins thrombosis / DVT).

Message from dr. Novi, if you have any complaints, do not hesitate or feel afraid to see a doctor. If there are complaints of varicose veins such as leg swelling/itching that does not go away, skin discoloration (blackening), frequent cramping, feeling heavy, immediately consult a cardiologist and blood vessel specialist (SPJP), for consultation and a vascular ultrasound examination (blood vessels) to diagnose varicose veins.
