Department of Communication Science FISIP UNDIP Held Film Screening and Discussion entitled “From Somewhere Else: Transnational Communities and Media”

The Department of Communication Science, Faculty of Social Science and Political Science, Diponegoro University held a Film Screening and Discussion entitled “Somewhere Else: Transnational Communities and Media” (September 15-16, 2022) at the Auditorium of FISIP Undip. The resource person of this event was Prof. Vandana Pednekar-Magal (Grand Valley State University).

This screening activity is one of a series of activities carried out by Prof. Vandana during her stay in Indonesia. The purpose of this activity is to introduce the journalistic profession to the Communication Science students. Class of 2020, 2021, and 2022 students were here to gain exposure about alternative jobs as journalists. This would help develop their thoughts in making choices of their majors.

In her material, Prof. Vandana said that the film “From Somewhere Else: Transnational Communities and Media” discussed transnational life in America, about the background of the arrival of immigrants, how they survive in America, which used to be known as the ‘melting pot’ concept, and its relationship to media developments. She said the message in the film is about how the media plays an important role in the daily lives of immigrants and how the media helps them connect with their home countries.
