Cool! UNDIP Opens Occupational Safety and Health Undergraduate Study Program

According to WHO (World Health Organization), Occupational Safety and Health (K3) is an effort to improve and maintain occupational health and safety, mental and social health and safety for every worker in all fields of work.

The Occupational Safety and Health (K3) Regulations are an effort to prevent workers’ health problems due to working conditions, protection for each worker in handling his work and various other types of work risks that are detrimental to occupational safety and health for workers.

Within the scope of tertiary institutions, Occupational Safety and Health covers the entire academic community and educational staff, including stakeholders or guests who visit or are in the Diponegoro University campus area.

Met on the sidelines of his busy schedule, the Dean of the Faculty of Public Health, Dr. Budiyono, SKM., M.Kes. explained the need to open an Occupational Safety and Health (K3) study program at the Faculty of Public Health (FKM) Undip. “In general, the goal of K3 is to create a safe and healthy work environment. To create a safe and healthy work environment, you must first have understanding and skills that include the introduction, control of factors that can be harmful, such as physical hazards (eg. accidents of machines or devices that have electricity), chemical hazards (eg. exposure to chemicals toxic substances), biological hazards (eg. infectious diseases), as well as psycho-social factors such as work stress. With so many risks in the work environment, all work sectors must control these risks so as not to cause health problems or threaten worker safety. For this reason, all work sectors need professional staff who are responsible for managing occupational safety and health. This is what prompted the need to open an Occupational Safety and Health (K3) study program that produces graduates to respond to the demand for Occupational Safety and Health staff,” explained Budiyono in his interview, Tuesday (16/5).

Furthermore, Budiyono explained that a good work environment and excellent human resources are not only built from regulations alone, but are also supported by understanding and awareness of all the components involved in applying norms or rules, including a good K3 culture.

“The importance of K3 culture is what underlies Diponegoro University to open the Occupational Safety and Health (K3) Undergraduate Study Program which is within the scope of the Faculty of Public Health. For job opportunities, graduates of S1 K3 will be needed in all sectors of business, industry, services, mining, and government, considering that Occupational Safety and Health culture is an obligation for companies or other work environments to guarantee workers/employees’ rights to safety and health in the work environment,” she added.

The Occupational Safety and Health Program (K3) of the Faculty of Public Health Undip has been registered at the Higher Education Database (PDDikti) with study program code 13242 based on Undip Rector’s Decree Number 89/UN7.A/HK/III/2023.
