7th International Seminar on LAMAS (Language Maintenance and Shift) on July 19-20, 2017

In global community, using English to create mutual understanding among the community members results that English is positioned as  a dominant  language in the world. The domination of English may affect on  the existence of  local languages of the countries where English is not the national / main language. In the countries like Indonesia, English is a foreign language. As a foreign language, English is learnt not acquired and at first  it was used not as prominent as first or second language. Up to now, It has been  used in a special occasion among other things, especially in formal situation. Therefore, not all Indonesian people can speak English well.

However, English is getting stonger and stronger. The recent tendency shows  that  English  is not only used in a specific moment but also in daily communication especially in global era like today. People communicate not only with other people from their home countries but also with those from abroad. This makes English become much more dominant, while  local languages get more threatened.

The threatening condition may affect the vitality of local languages. In this occasion, the question about the vitality of local languages is important to discuss. This topic can be investigated from different perspectives in linguistics either micro or macro one.
