UNDIP Community Service Students at Lengkong Gudang Village, South Tangerang City Held Hypertension Gymnastics Work Program

The students team of UNDIP Community Service at Lengkong Gudang Village, Serpong, South Tangerang held Hypertension Gymnastics which was one of their work programs. According to Atsaniyah Khoirunnisa (Student of the Faculty of Medicine), hypertension that has the nickname “The Silent Killer” is a non-communicable disease that is one of the main causes of premature death in the world. Most people with this disease are not aware of their illness. Hypertension is a threat to society because of its ability to cause complications such as stroke, coronary heart disease, and kidney failure.

“From the data obtained at the Lengkong Gudang Village area, most of the participants of Posbindu or Integrated Assistance Post have hypertension, so we organize a healthy exercise program to control hypertension,” she said.

Atsaniyah said there are several things that need to be considered in controlling hypertension, such as regular health checks and following doctor’s recommendations to overcome the diseases with proper and regular treatment, a balanced diet, implementing physical activity safely and avoiding cigarette smoke, alcohol and other carcinogens substances.

Participants were very enthusiastic in participating in the activity. The event was followed by free health checks including blood pressure checks, blood sugar checks, and health checks for infectious diseases with midwives from the Puskesmas Serpong.

“In the future, it is hoped that healthy exercise activities to control hypertension can continue to be carried out at the Posbindu, because light and easy-to-follow gymnastics makes it easier for participants to follow and creates a healthy lifestyle for people with hypertension,” she concluded.
