Lumbung Mataraman is one of the programs of the Provincial Government of the Special Region of Yogyakarta using Special Funds (DAIS) with the aim of empowering and improving the community’s economy. The Mataraman Barn in Bendung Kapanewon Semin Village, Gunungkidul was inaugurated by the Governor of DIY Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X in December 2022. On a 1.5 hectares area which is Bendung Village treasury land, the Mataraman Barn is managed jointly by the Association of Farmers Groups, Women’s Groups Farmers from 9 Padukuhan, planted with various agricultural commodities. Not only in the field of food crops, but there are 250 sheep that are raised and managed in this area. Thus the Mataraman Gunungkidul Barn is indeed a livestock development area based on an integrated agricultural pattern.

Head of Bendung Village, Didik Rubiyanto said that managing sheep livestock requires a lot of knowledge in order to be able to cultivate it economically and profitably. In its development, it turns out that the feed factor for 250 sheep has become an obstacle for the manager of the Mataraman Barn. “Provision of quality feed for livestock is indeed a problem for us in managing sheep breeding. For this reason, Bendung Village requires training and assistance from academics, namely from the Faculty of Animal and Agricultural Sciences Undip,” explained Didik.

In order to answer the problems faced by the Mataraman Gunungkidul Barn, Faculty of Animal and Agricultural Sciences Undip held a training activity on making complete feed to increase the productivity of fattening sheep on last Tuesday, March 7, 2023.  The Lecturer Team led by the Deputy Dean for Academic Affairs Dr. Ir. Limbang Kustiawan Nuswantara, S.Pt., M.P., IPU, apart from providing training, also assists in the practice of making complete feeds. Agung Subrata, S.Pt, M.P. in the training material explains the importance of selecting local feed ingredients that have the potential as a source of protein and energy in order to formulate the right complete feed. Dr. Ir. Cahya Setya Utama, S.Pt., M.Si., IPM, a lecturer from the Feed Technology Laboratory conducted an evaluation in the manufacture of feed that has been carried out so far. Several technical inputs were provided so that in the future the manager of the Mataraman Gunungkidul Barn will be able to independently produce quality complete feed. It is hoped that the sheep breeding business will be successful and of course be able to improve the community’s economic welfare, especially the residents of the Bendung Village.

This training activity is a form of community service activity which is always carried out by Undip in a series of accelerating the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Thus this activity is expected to end poverty that still exists in the community.
